Sergey Karjakin is a Russian chess grandmaster. Due to a now-deleted tweet, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has banned Russian chess grandmaster Sergey Karjakin from tournaments. “Sergey Karjakin has been found guilty of violating article 2.2.10 of the FIDE code of ethics and has been sanctioned to a six-month worldwide ban from participation as a participant in any FIDE-rated chess competition, effective from the date of this judgement, March 21, 2022,” FIDE said in a statement.
“Sergey Karjakin’s comments on the continuing military confrontation in Ukraine have sparked a flurry of responses on social media and elsewhere, the majority of which have been hostile to the views stated.” As a result, FIDE, which unites national chess federations worldwide, suspended the 32-year-old.
How Rich is Sergey Karjakin?
He was the world’s youngest grandmaster at the time, having qualified at 12 years and seven months. In 1999, Karjakin won the European U10 Chess Championship, and in 2001, he was crowned World U12 Chess Champion. At the age of 11, he received the International Master title, and in 2003, he received the Grandmaster title.
In 2004, he competed for Ukraine at the Chess Olympiad, winning team and individual gold. Before going to Russia, he competed in two more Chess Olympiads for Ukraine, winning the Corus chess tournament in 2009. Since then, he has competed in five Chess Olympiads for Russia, winning individual gold in 2010. In 2013[3] and 2019, he won team gold with Russia at the World Team Chess Championship.
Karjakin won the World Rapid Chess Championship in 2012 and the Norwegian Chess Championships in 2013 and 2014. He finished second in the 2014 Candidates Tournament. He qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2016 after winning the Chess World Cup in 2015.
He came out on top of the competition and gained the chance to compete in the World Chess Championship. After drawing 6–6 in the classical games, he lost the championship match to Magnus Carlsen in the rapid tiebreaks in November 2016. He won the 2016 World Blitz Chess Championship. In 2018, he finished third in the Candidates event and qualified for the 2022 Candidates by finishing second in the Chess World Cup 2021.
